I was really curious about how the Amazon Echo
worked but buying one seemed a bit risky since I was a bit skeptical
whether I would find a good use for it (wasn't too far off...). Every
once in a while, Amazon releases a challenge where, if you build an Alexa Skill,
they will send you a free Echo; so that was my chance. This is an Amazon
Alexa Skills which consists on a trivia game where the player gets
asked 5 questions from the Harry Potter books or movies alike. The game
keeps track of your score and will give you a magic rank based on how
you did.
The Skill was built using Javascript with Amazon's Lambda platform and Developer Console. The Skill uses Amazon's text to speech converter and voice recognition to interact with the user and understand their intent. During development we must include many Utterances (ways of giving an answer) in order to account for all the possible answer formats given (i.e. Question: "What is the name of the director of Hogwarts", Answer: "Professor Dumbledore"). The Skill is released on the Alexa Store. You can try it out if you install Trivia for Muggles on your own Alexa device. Alternatively you can play on the simulator. Just click the button below and Amazon's Simulator environment will pop up in a new window. To activate, press the center button and hold while you say "Alexa, open Trivia for Muggles". I recommend reviewing first because there are some pretty tough questions in the game.
